Data science is an emerging field that is revolutionizing science and industries alike. Work across nearly all domains is becoming more data-driven, affecting both the jobs that are available and the skills that are required. As more data and ways of analyzing them become available, more aspects of the economy, society, and daily life will become dependent on data. (Data Science for Undergraduates: Opportunities and Options, National Academies Press 2017)

The Data Science major at Belmont University teaches students how to interpret large datasets to understand the story that data are telling and how to communicate that story to a wide audience. A unique mix of interdisciplinary coursework in the areas of math and computer science prepares our students to enter this dynamic field in a variety of scientific and industry settings.

The demand for Data Scientists is projected to grow throughout the next decade with Forbes predicting that there will be a 28% increase in demand for data scientists by the year 2020. According to a recent Glassdoor study, Data Scientist tops the 2019 list of entry-level jobs that command the highest salaries, boasting a median base salary of $95,000. In response to this industry demand, Belmont’s Data Science program has partnered with the top data scientists from leading companies to create a robust curriculum that teaches students the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

Our industry advisors include:

  • Hospital Corporation of America (HCA)
  • Asurion
  • Digital Reasoning
  • Eventbrite
  • GitLab
  • Stratasan
  • Perception Health
  • Built Technologies
  • BMI
  • Axial Healthcare
  • Watershed LRS
  • NaviHealth
  • Nashville Biosciences
  • Think Tennessee

Students in Belmont’s Data Science program can enhance their classroom learning by pursuing data science jobs and internships (which are most often paid). We also offer students opportunities to participate in a data scientist in residence program, data projects and industry office hours from the beginning of their studies to the time that they enter careers and/or graduate school.
